10 CrossFit beginner mistakes (and how to avoid them)
Partager
Everyone goes through it. The first weeks of CrossFit are a festival of classic mistakes, often the same for everyone — and luckily, almost all of them are easy to fix once you know how to spot them.
Load and ego mistakes
1. Trying to go Rx in the first month
Scaling isn't a punishment, it's the tool that lets you progress without getting hurt. Nobody remembers your first Rx WOD; everyone remembers the injury that kept you out for 3 months.
2. Loading more than your technique allows
Adding weight before you've mastered the movement unloaded is the recipe for burning bad technique into your muscle memory — and having to rebuild it all later.
Consistency mistakes
3. Training flat out every day from the start
Your body needs time to adapt to a new type of effort. Two or three sessions a week for the first few months beats five sessions followed by a forced three-week break.
4. Comparing your times to other people's
Your only real opponent is you from three months ago. Comparing yourself to the box's experienced athletes brings nothing but pointless frustration.
Technical and practical mistakes
- 5. Skipping the warm-up: arriving at the last minute and jumping straight into the WOD significantly increases injury risk.
- 6. Not asking the coach for corrections: that's what coaches are there for, and an early correction saves you months of bad habits.
- 7. Neglecting mobility: good range of motion often matters more than raw strength on many movements.
- 8. Not knowing the jargon before you arrive: showing up without the basics of CrossFit vocabulary makes your first sessions more stressful than they need to be.
- 9. Neglecting hydration: arriving at the box already dehydrated kills performance and increases the risk of cramps, especially on long WODs.
- 10. Trying to do everything alone without listening to the experienced: the athletes who progress fastest are the ones who ask the box veterans questions rather than rediscovering everything alone.
Mindset mistakes
Wanting to master everything in the first few weeks, and giving up as soon as a movement resists, are the two surest ways to quit CrossFit before reaping the benefits. The progress curve is rarely linear — accept the plateaus, they're part of the journey.
And for your first sessions (successful or not), a comfortable outfit never hurts: our WOD.LOL collection is made for that.
