21 signs you've (really) become addicted to CrossFit

At first, it was “just to try it”. One intro session, then two a week, then… you know the rest. Mentally tick off every sign that applies to you: the score is at the end (and no, you can't scale it).

⚡ In short

  • 21 signs sorted into 4 categories: language, daily life, wardrobe, social life.
  • Count your points and find out your addiction level at the end.
  • Spoiler: if you read this whole article, you've already got at least 1 point.

Your language has changed

  1. You say “AMRAP” to describe your Sunday: “I'm doing as many loads of laundry as possible in 2 hours.”
  2. You've already answered “Rx” to “How do you take your coffee?”.
  3. You count stairs in “reps”.
  4. The word “Murph” triggers a physical reaction. So does “burpees”. And “thrusters”.
  5. You've explained the word WOD to your grandmother. Twice. (If you want the rest of the vocabulary, we made a glossary of 30 terms.)
Sign no. 22, bonus: you walk on your hands when you're bored.

Your daily life revolves around the WOD

  1. You check the box programming BEFORE the weather forecast.
  2. On holiday, you search “box” on Google Maps before “beach”.
  3. Your hands look like a carpenter's, and you're proud of it. (We have a guide to save them.)
  4. Your fridge contains more meal-prep boxes than identifiable food.
  5. You know your back squat 1RM but not your card PIN.
  6. You have a special “last round” playlist (we made ours).

Your wardrobe gave you away

  1. 70% of your t-shirts have a sports message. The other 30% are comp t-shirts.
  2. You bought slightly looser jeans “because of the quads”.
  3. You own more pairs of training shoes than everyday shoes.
  4. You wear your box t-shirt at the weekend, “because it's comfy”. Sure.

Oversized tees with messages only the real ones understand. Your friends and family have figured it out anyway.

So did your social life

  1. You met your best mates while suffering next to them on a rower.
  2. You've celebrated a birthday with a themed WOD.
  3. You say “fancy a quick WOD?” the way other people say “fancy dinner?”.
  4. You have strong opinions about the barbells at the box next door.
  5. You travelled 600 km for a comp and think that's normal (so do we: here's the proof).
  6. You've sent this article to someone with the caption “this is you”.

Your score

Points Diagnosis
0 – 5 Curious. You've got one foot in the box, the other's still outside. Not for long.
6 – 12 Moderately addicted. You still say “I could stop whenever I want”. Nobody believes you.
13 – 18 Confirmed addict. Your coach knows your schedule better than your family does.
19 – 21 Hopeless case. Congratulations: you're one of us. 🏆

FAQ

Is it normal to be addicted to CrossFit?

Early enthusiasm is very common: the community, the fast progress and the variety make it really motivating. The important thing is to keep rest days and listen to your body.

How many sessions a week when you're starting out?

2 to 3 sessions a week for the first few months, then 3 to 5 depending on your recovery. Read our 10 beginner mistakes to avoid overtraining.

Why do CrossFitters talk about CrossFit so much?

Because it's a very community-driven activity, with its own vocabulary, rituals and competitions. And because everyone needs to tell people about their last Murph.
